Benefits of the “Plant a Mangrove” PROGRAMME

Natural protectors

Natural protectors

As living barriers, mangroves protect our coasts from storms and erosion, safeguarding entire communities against extreme weather events. Their complex root systems reduce wave height by up to 66% within the first 100 metres of mangrove forest.

Economic livelihood

Economic livelihood

A healthy mangrove can generate up to USD 37,500 per hectare per year in ecosystem services such as fishing, tourism and coastal protection. In the Ciénaga Grande, more than 3,000 families depend directly on these resources.

Climate guardians

Climate guardians

Mangroves are true environmental superheroes, able to capture up to 10 times more CO2 than land forests. A single hectare can store up to 1,000 tonnes of carbon in its biomass and soil.

Cradle of life

Cradle of life

Mangroves are more than trees: they are floating homes for hundreds of species. Their roots act as a nursery for 70% of commercial fish and shellfish species during their juvenile stage.

Natural filters

Natural filters

Mangroves act as natural filtration systems, improving water quality by trapping sediment and filtering pollutants. Their roots can remove up to 60% of the heavy metals present in the water.
